This course looks at the economic and political forces that have led to rapid changes in global interaction and culture over the past century, with special emphasis on the last twenty years. It explores the issues of nationalism, global citizenry, state violence, terrorism, the global economy, migration, the threatened environment, technology, and the role of multinational media industries on culture. Students who have completed, or are enrolled in, SOC 5 may not receive credit. | ||||

This course introduces students to the origins, current status, and future trends of major transnational issues confronting the global community. Predominant issues will focus on political, economic, and cultural globalization. Within that, topics may include population trends; economic development and inequality; basic human needs (for food, water, health care); human rights; international conflict, resource, and security concerns; cultural exchange, destruction, and creation; and environmental problems. The course also focuses on global governance, including the study of collective global responsibilities. Recommended Course Preparation: Eligibility for college-level composition as determined by college assessment or other appropriate method. | ||||
